Examining the crime prevention claims of crime prevention through environmental design on system-trespassing behaviors: a randomized experiment

Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a non-punitive method for reducing crime the of built environment. The relevance CPTED strategies, however, less clear in context computing environments. Building upon prior research indicating that environments may change computer users’ behaviors, this study tests effectiveness CPTED-based approaches mitigating system-trespassing events. Findings from randomized controlled field trial demonstrate specific strategies can mitigate hacking events by number concurrent activities on target computer, attenuating commands typed attacked and decreasing likelihood hackers returning to previously hacked Our findings suggest some novel readily implemented cybercrime.
